Iodine is a trace mineral essential for making thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and brain development.
What does it do?
It supports energy balance, temperature regulation, and fertility. Deficiency can cause goiter and hypothyroidism.
What foods and how much do I need to get DV?
The Daily Value (DV) is 150 mcg.
1 teaspoon iodized salt = ~100% DV
1 cup milk = ~60% DV
1 large egg = ~20% DV
3 ounces cod = ~90% DV
Do I need a supplement for everyday health?
Not if you use iodized salt or eat seafood and dairy. Vegans and those avoiding iodized salt may need supplementation.
