Myo-Inistol
Myo-inositol is a vitamin-like compound that plays a key role in cell signaling, especially in how your body responds to insulin. It helps improve the way cells take up glucose, supports hormone balance, and influences neurotransmitters in the brain. Because of this, myo-inositol is often used for insulin resistance, metabolic health, and conditions linked to hormone imbalance such as PCOS. It’s also being studied for mood support, since it can affect serotonin pathways.
Does it really work?
Yes — strong clinical evidence supports myo-inositol for women with PCOS, where it improves insulin sensitivity, lowers androgen levels, restores more regular cycles, and can improve fertility. In people with insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome, studies also show improvements in blood sugar control, though the effects are milder than with berberine or R-ALA. Research on mood and anxiety is more limited, with some small studies suggesting benefit, but the strongest and most consistent human data is for PCOS and insulin resistance.
Can I get enough in real food?
Yes — myo-inositol is naturally present in foods like whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, citrus fruits, and cantaloupe. Most people get a few hundred milligrams daily from their diet. However, the doses used in clinical studies for PCOS and insulin resistance are much higher — usually several grams per day. That means while food provides a baseline, supplements are needed to reach the therapeutic levels shown to be effective.
Do I need a supplement for everyday health?
Most healthy people get enough myo-inositol from food for normal cell function, so a supplement isn’t necessary. But for women with PCOS, or people struggling with insulin resistance and blood sugar balance, supplements can provide the much higher doses that have been shown in clinical trials to improve outcomes. In these cases, myo-inositol is often considered a safe and effective first-line option, especially for women trying to restore fertility naturally.
