Folate (Methylfolate)
Folate (Methylfolate)
Folate is a B vitamin essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, and preventing neural tube defects in early pregnancy.
Does it really work?
Absolutely. Adequate folate before and during early pregnancy is critical for egg quality, early embryo development, and reducing the risk of birth defects. Methylfolate (the active form) is often recommended over synthetic folic acid for better absorption and use by the body.
Can I get enough in real food?
Yes. Dark leafy greens, beans, lentils, asparagus, and citrus fruits are all good sources. However, food alone often doesn’t provide enough to meet preconception and pregnancy needs.
Do I need a supplement for everyday health?
Yes. Folate is a universal, non-negotiable supplement for women trying to conceive. It should be started at least 3 months before pregnancy and continued through early pregnancy.
