NAC

NAC is a supplement form of the amino acid cysteine. It’s best known as a precursor to glutathione, the body’s “master antioxidant” and one of the key players in detox. NAC helps the liver neutralize and eliminate toxins, supports lung health by thinning mucus, and protects cells from oxidative stress.

Does it really work?

Yes, NAC has strong clinical backing. It’s been used in hospitals for decades to treat acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose because of its ability to quickly restore glutathione. Research also shows it may support liver health, reduce inflammation, and even help clear environmental pollutants. For everyday use, effects are subtler but real — especially for people under high toxin exposure or oxidative stress.

Can I get enough in real food?

Not directly. While cysteine is present in protein-rich foods (like poultry, eggs, and legumes), NAC itself is not found in food. To get the same detox benefits seen in research, you need supplementation.

Do I need a supplement for everyday health?

No. Your body can usually make enough glutathione if you eat a nutrient-rich diet with adequate protein, selenium, and sulfur-containing foods (like garlic and onions). NAC can be a useful add-on for people who want extra support, but it’s not essential for daily wellness.
