Dish Soap & Dishwasher Detergent: Hidden Toxins to Watch For

Many conventional dish soaps and dishwasher detergents contain chemicals that can irritate the skin, disrupt hormones, or leave behind residues. Common offenders include:

  • Fragrance blends (often with phthalates)

  • Preservatives like methylisothiazolinone (MI)

  • Surfactants such as SLS/SLES, which may contain 1,4-dioxane

  • Artificial dyes and chlorine bleach

  • Synthetic enzymes in dishwasher pods

These ingredients can linger on dishes or become airborne in steam during wash cycles, exposing you and your family.

Sponges

Most conventional sponges are made from plastic-based materials that shed microplastics and may be treated with antimicrobials like triclosan, linked to hormone disruption. They also trap moisture, making them a hotspot for bacteria and mold.
Better swap: Choose natural cellulose, loofah, or compostable scrubbers you can use without the toxins.
