Laundry Detergent
Most conventional laundry detergents rely on synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, preservatives, and harsh surfactants to deliver powerful cleaning and that “just-washed” scent. But many of these ingredients—like methylisothiazolinone, phthalates, and nonylphenol ethoxylates—are linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption, and environmental harm. These chemicals can linger on clothes and bedding, where they’re inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
Non-toxic cleaners use mineral-based ingredients like sodium carbonate and percarbonate. They’re safer and biodegradable but slightly less strong on heavy stains—a fair trade for fewer toxins and safer use on babies and sensitive skin.
Bleach
Conventional bleach whitens well but releases harsh fumes and residues that can irritate skin and weaken fabrics. Safer oxygen-based options (like sodium carbonate or percarbonate) lift stains effectively without chlorine, breaking down into water, oxygen, and soda ash.
Stain Remover
Fabric Softener
Fabric softeners and dryer sheets promise soft, fresh-smelling laundry, but they achieve that effect by coating fabrics with chemicals you might not want against your skin. Conventional products typically contain undisclosed fragrance blends (often including phthalates and other VOCs), quaternary ammonium compounds or “quats” (linked to respiratory irritation and possible endocrine disruption), and a thin residue that can actually reduce towel absorbency over time.
